I don't personally think giving people enough money to feed their kids when you've failed to protect jobs or create any fulfilling alternatives for those left behind by the rapidity of industralisation counts as 'extreme benevolence'. It seems like basic humanity to me.

Not everything in life is an exchange. It seems that actually people become far more giving and active members of society when they don't feel at risk of losing their house and have enough food to eat.
