Personally, I think life is far from 'one big whatever' I tend to steer as far away from nihilism, mainly because it seems to turn people into dicks!
For me I feel there is a benevolent nature to reality, even when it feels far from it. I have experienced enough transcendental moments of awe, beauty and love to be convinced that there is a loving force at work in our universe, whatever that may mean.
I wouldn't claim that as a universal truth though. It feels very real to me and gives my existence meaning but I wouldn't expect anyone to share those beliefs.
I think there are very general moral standards that are pretty universal. It seems to me that societies don't need to appeal to truth to agree that a world in which we don't murder each other is a better one. 'Love thy neighbour as yourself' would be a pretty good guide. I feel like the problem so often is not about getting individuals to agree to truths but getting them to uphold them in their own lives, especially when no one is looking!
